Carpool & Vanpool

Find a Carpool

Carpools can be a great commute option – letting you share the costs of driving (tolls and gas), and potentially saving time by avoiding congestion in HOV lanes. See how much you could potentially save here. Merge and BART provide free carpool matching apps to help you find someone commuting to/from somewhere convenient to you.

Join or Start a Vanpool

Vanpools can be a cost-effective and stress-free way to commute – especially if you have a long commute and have a consistent work schedule. The Bay Area Vanpool Program offers monthly subsidies of up to $500 for those who join or form a vanpool. Depending on your county of residence you may also qualify for additional local subsidies, which can be stacked to further reduce your costs.

You can either rent a van through Enterprise Commute or use your own vehicle. Preferred parking is available on the Bayer campus for carpool and vanpool vehicles. Carpool and vanpool commuters are encouraged to contact info@bayerrides.com for parking and accommodation support.

Merge

Merge is a free carpool matching service intended to form ongoing commuter carpools. The service is free, but carpool members can decide if and how they want to share commute costs – not necessarily only gas and tools, carpool drivers could for example include a charge to cover other vehicle ownership costs such as insurance, financing and wear and tear. Sometimes people take turns driving to evenly divide the cost.

Carpool to BART with the BART Official App

BART’s Carpool Parking program, offered through the BART Official App, allows carpoolers to purchase parking and park anywhere in the Permit sections of the BART parking lots, which typically fill later and have more availability. The program is available at all BART stations with Permit parking except Glen Park and Pittsburg Center.

Where to Meet?

Park and Ride lots aren’t just destinations for BART carpoolers – many commuters park their own vehicle and meet their carpool there. The map below shows Park and Ride lots around the Bay Area.

Guaranteed Ride Home

If something happens and you need to leave urgently (or you miss your carpool), you can get your taxi, Uber, or Lyft ride reimbursed through the Guaranteed Ride Home program.
